CUPD identifies suspicious device discovered April 28

The Cornell University Police Department (CUPD) has identified the suspicious device discovered on campus April 28.

The device, which required removal from the Endicott Bomb Squad, consisted of cardboard, wires, a battery and a motor glued together. It was not an explosive, and it remains unclear as to who placed the device and why. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The device was found in a drainpipe with a limited view from the outside. First responding officers and bomb squad personnel were only able to see a small portion of the device, including the battery and wires, and determined the best course of action was to remove it by use of a robot. It was then transported from campus for further analysis.

“I’m glad the device was ultimately determined not to be dangerous,” said CUPD Chief Kathy Zoner. “The person who first reported the suspicious device was justified in doing so. The safety of the community is our first priority, and we encourage anyone who observes a suspicious package or activity to call Cornell Police without hesitation at 607-255-1111.”
