Art Deco chic

Early 20th-century fashion illustration, vintage clothing and student designs are featured in “Vintage Vision: Vogel, Vogue, and the Art of Gazette du Bon Ton,” on display through Aug. 31 in the Mann Library lobby and Top Shelf Gallery. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

In 1912, Lucien Vogel started la Gazette du Bon Ton, a magazine presenting the fashions of prominent Parisian design houses in the most luxurious way possible. A stable of brilliant young artists filled the pages of the Gazette, shaping the art of fashion for decades to come with stylish prints that helped propel Art Deco to the forefront of the design world. Vogel went on to be art director of Condé Nast’s French Vogue in 1923.

“Vintage Vision” spotlights a selection of images from the Gazette, reproduced from Mann Library’s special collections to highlight the brilliance and impact of this artistry. Also featured: vintage clothing on loan from the Cornell Costume and Textile Collection in the College of Human Ecology, and work by current fiber science and apparel design students – who, guided by professor Susan Ashdown, have transformed some of the exhibit’s silhouette images into exquisite half-size models of flowing, textured fabric.

Summer screenings

The results are in: Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, Alfred Hitchcock, and Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers will be featured in Cornell Cinema’s summer Terrace Screenings of classic films old and new.

The four Wednesday night screenings under the stars on Willard Straight Terrace feature a cocktail/picnic hour with a cash bar and complimentary snacks (bring your own picnic) before the film starts, usually around 9:30 p.m. Drawings for three pairs of Cornell Cinema guest passes will be held at each show.

Four movies were the popular choices of Cornell Cinema patrons and film lovers in a recent online survey. The lineup:

• June 22: Allen’s “Annie Hall” (1977), one of the actor-writer-director’s most romantic and funniest films, co-stars Diane Keaton and has a memorable early Christopher Walken performance.

• June 29: Anderson’s color-saturated fantasy “Moonrise Kingdom” (2012) is funny and bittersweet, with a pair of youngsters (Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward) falling in love and confounding several concerned adults (Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray and Bob Balaban).

• July 13: Hitchcock’s “Strangers on a Train” (1951), adapted from a Patricia Highsmith novel, mixes comedy and suspense with Farley Granger as a reluctant co-conspirator in murder with Robert Walker.

• July 27: The classically entertaining Hollywood musical comedy “Top Hat” (1935) is a showcase for famed dancing partners Astaire and Rogers, co-starring for director Mark Sandrich.

Seating is limited and advance tickets are recommended. Tickets can be purchased ($13 each, $11 for students and senior citizens) at CornellCinemaTickets.com starting Wednesday, June 1. Tickets can be picked up on the night of the screening; any tickets unclaimed by 9:15 p.m. may be resold. Sales at the door are cash only, if tickets are still available.

Doors open at 8:15 p.m. The rain location is Willard Straight Theatre. For more information, call 607-255-3522.
