Real Estate Council conference to explore the 'new normal'

The 34th annual conference of the Cornell Real Estate Council, Oct. 13-14 in New York City, will explore the “new normal” in real estate.

The focus of the conference will be on new forces – including the shared economy, capital market regulation and design technologies – causing dramatic changes in the industry. Participants will discuss how the rules are being rewritten and how individuals and companies are adapting to these changes.

Held in collaboration with the Baker Program in Real Estate, the conference at the Westin New York at Times Square is open to all members of the real estate community. Attendees are asked to register online.

An Oct. 13 dinner will feature a keynote by MaryAnne Gilmartin, president and CEO of Forest City Ratner Companies, a New York-based real estate development business.

Gilmartin is the 2016 recipient of the Baker Program’s Industry Leader Award, which recognizes transformational leadership in the real estate industry. Her projects have included The Bridge at Cornell Tech, the new office building on the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island. She has also worked on the development of The New York Times Building, and New York by Gehry, the tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere. Gilmartin also is leading the effort to build out the Pacific Park Brooklyn mixed-use development, including the new Barclays Center sports and entertainment facility.

Opening with a presentation on the state of current capital markets, the conference will feature findings from the 2016 Institutional Real Estate Allocations Monitor, a survey co-sponsored by the Baker Program; and panels on disruption, the built environment and property location.

The keynote speakers Oct. 14 will be J. Allen Smith ’80, MPS ’86, president and CEO of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts; and School of Hotel Administration alumnus Michael Gross ’97, vice chairman of WeWork.

The Cornell Real Estate Council provides a forum for the university’s real estate alumni to convene, network, exchange ideas and lead discussions about cutting-edge topics in real estate.

The Baker Program in Real Estate, a professional program housed in the College of Architecture, Art and Planning and the School of Hotel Administration, provides teaching, research and career services in the field.
