Second annual celebration to highlight Cornell's campuswide entrepreneurship efforts, April 19-20

To celebrate Cornell's entrepreneurial spirit across campus, the second annual universitywide Entrepreneurship@Cornell Celebration, April 19-20, will feature symposiums, an expo highlighting Cornell technology and panel discussions for students, faculty, staff and alumni. Among its highlights:

Thursday, April 19:

  • Keynote speech by Cornell Entrepreneur of the Year (CEY) Kevin McGovern '70, chairman/CEO of McGovern Capital LLC, 4:30-5:30 p.m., Statler Auditorium, free and open to the public;
  • Gala dinner hosted by President David Skorton to recognize McGovern as CEY and announce the winners of the Johnson School Business Idea Contest and other student awards; 7:15 p.m., Statler Ballroom; $75 ticket.

Friday, April 20:

  • Thirteen panel discussions on hospitality, real estate, health, venture capital and sustainability, and agriculture, food and life sciences, 7:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m., various locations in Statler Hall; $25 ticket, $10 for students;
  • Luncheon presentation by Nancy Schlichting, MBA '79, president and CEO of Henry Ford Health System, speaking on "Building a Culture of Innovation and Initiative," 1:15-2 p.m., Statler Ballroom; $25 ticket, $10 for students;
  • Entrepreneurship@Cornell Resource Expo of universitywide resources, including student groups and Cornell Center for Technology, Enterprise and Commercialization exhibitors, 2:30-4:30 p.m., Statler Foyer, free and open to the public; and
  • Cornell Entrepreneur Network panel of alumni discussing "Where the Smart Money Is Going Now and Where It Might Be Headed."

This year's celebration, say organizers, highlights Cornell's coordinated efforts to foster the entrepreneurial spirit among a wide range of Cornell constituents in a campuswide approach that includes educational programs and alumni outreach.

"Like Forrest [Gump] told us, life is like a box of chocolates," says Deborah Streeter, professor of applied economics and management. "And at the Entrepreneurship@Cornell celebration, our students, faculty, staff and alums can pick and choose from a great assortment of satisfying offerings on entrepreneurship -- from business in the life sciences to family business to student-run businesses to venture-backed enterprise to sustainability and environmental entrepreneurship. The event is a great example of what happens when we break down the artificial barriers that keep us in our academic 'silos.'"
