August 2007
New Cornellians were kept busy from the moment they arrived on campus for Orientation, Aug. 17 -- from listening to President David Skorton's Convocation address emphasizing freedom with responsibility and discussing Nadine Gordimer's "The Pickup" to watching edgy skits about diversity and learning how to avoid the "freshman 15."
Provost Biddy Martin has named David R. Harris, left, vice provost for social sciences, to the newly established position of deputy provost. At the same time, Robert Buhrman, director of Cornell's Center for Nanoscale Systems, has been named vice provost for research. He succeeds Nobel laureate Robert Richardson, who will become senior science adviser to President Skorton and to Martin.
Cornell Alumni Magazine and Cornell's Division of University Communications will be working together to develop a new Web site for the magazine, a move that university officials call a "wonderful opportunity" for building a new relationship. The magazine, which is published by the Cornell Alumni Federation and is independent from the university, will develop the new online presence starting this fall. The site, said magazine editor and publisher Jim Roberts, will serve as a better bridge between alumni and Cornell than ever before.
From being named "Hottest Ivy" by Newsweek to having the best college motto, Cornell's excellence was recognized in several national polls this month.
