Reminder: Pet insurance always available

In spring 2008, Cornell began offering pet insurance at group-discounted rates, using the Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI). Cornell staff and faculty can enroll in pet insurance at any time and use payroll deduction to pay the premiums. Now, while staff and faculty are thinking about their own health insurance, might be a good time to think about a pet's health, too.

VPI pet insurance is offered through Cornell's vendor for auto and home insurance, Marsh@Works Solutions.

VPI pet insurance covers:

  • Medical treatments and surgeries for such minor problems as ear infections, bite wounds, Lyme disease and bee stings;
  • Major problems such as broken bones, diabetes and cancer; and
  • Optional coverage for vaccinations and routine care, heartworm protection, teeth cleaning and other maintenance procedures.

VPI pet insurance does not cover:

  • Elective procedures;
  • Pet food;
  • Grooming;
  • Behavioral problems;
  • Congenital or hereditary defects; or
  • Pre-existing conditions that are not resolved.

The insurance covers dogs, cats, birds and exotic pets. Each pet is covered under a separate contract. There is no network, and you can take your pet to the veterinarian of your choice. You pay your vet's bill in full and have your vet provide you with a diagnosis, treatment date(s) and itemized invoice(s) for processing. You send these to VPI insurance for reimbursement.
