Cornellians in the Olympics: An update

As the 2006 Winter Olympics continue in Turin, Italy, here are updates about Cornellians participating in the games.

The Canadian women's ice hockey team, coached by Melody Davidson (head coach of the Cornell women's hockey team, now on leave), handily won its first three games in a row, trouncing Italy, 16-0, Russia, 12-0 and Sweden, 8-1. The Canadian team, the gold-medal favorite, competes again Friday, Feb. 17, in the semifinals and almost certainly in the medal games on Monday, Feb. 20.

Matt Savoie, who plans to be a Cornell Law School student next fall, was eighth after Tuesday's short program. He finished fifth in the free skate Thursday, for an overall seventh place in the competition.

Freestyle moguls skier Travis Mayer, a Cornell junior majoring in applied economics and management, finished seventh in the men's moguls final Wednesday, Feb. 15. Mayer, the silver medalist in the event at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, announced his retirement.

Jamie Silverstein, an ice dancer who attended Cornell for two years in the College of Arts and Sciences before taking a leave for the Olympics, will compete with her partner, Ryan O'Meara, Friday, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m. in the compulsory dance program, Sunday, Feb. 19, at 1 p.m. in the original dance program, and again Monday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. in the free program.
