Nanobiotechnology symposium will focus on medical applications at nanoscales

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The sixth annual Nanobiotechnology Symposium, slated for Aug. 15 at Cornell University, will focus on medical applications of nanobiotechnology, the science of fabricating devices at scales as small as a few billionths of a meter for studying biological systems.

Cornell researchers and other leaders in this new field will speak at the symposium, which was organized by researchers at Cornell's Nanobiotechnology Center (NBTC) and is co-sponsored by the New York Academy of Sciences and the Kavli Institute at Cornell for Nanoscale Science. 

"Recent advances are developing new tools capable of addressing individual molecules within complex biological systems to explore the dynamics of biological events at the nano/microscale," said Graham Kerslick, NBTC associate director. "This research advances our understanding of life processes at molecular and subcellular scales." 

Cornell speakers include: Michael Shuler, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering; Kelvin Lee, associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering; Amit Lal, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering; Barbara Baird, professor of chemistry and chemical biology; and Harold Craighead and Manfred Lindau, professors of applied and engineering physics. 

Other speakers include: Jeffery Schloss, program director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health; Cees Dekker, Kavli Institute of Nanoscience, Delft University of Technology; Maciej Zborowski, associate staff in biomedical engineering, Lerner Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation; and Robert Austin, professor of physics at Princeton University.

A luncheon with limited space will be offered, and a poster session will follow the lectures.
