Big Red athletes rewrite the record books this winter
For the first time in Cornell basketball history, both the men's and women's teams represented the Ivy League in their respective NCAA tournaments, March 20 and March 23. It was the first Ivy League championship title for the women and the first since 1988 for the men. Also capping an impressive season was Cornell wrestler Jordan Leen, who won the NCAA wrestling title at 157 pounds, March 22.
Joe Thomas takes the helm of the Johnson School
Joe Thomas in his office The scholar, teacher and academic administrator has been named dean of Cornell's Johnson School. Thomas has been serving as interim dean since June 2007. Cornell President David Skorton welcomed the news of Thomas' appointment, saying, "Joe Thomas is a superb choice to lead the Johnson School, a school well known for its strong research faculty, its innovative and world-class educational programs and the success of its graduates."
From the Big Easy to the Big Apple, Skorton discusses global issues
Cornell President David Skorton and former U.S. President Bill Clinton in New Orleans Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative University, March 15 at Tulane University, Cornell President David Skorton provided an outline for how universities can make a difference through committed action. Then, at a March 19 meeting in New York City of 10 university leaders, he told national reporters that higher education should be seen as a problem solver, not as an interest group, and that non-defense research funding should be increased.
