Guidelines for news media covering Cornell's Commencement May 29 and Gen. Wesley Clark's Senior Convocation address May 28

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell University will celebrate its 137th Commencement on Sunday, May 29, with approximately 5,600 graduates receiving degrees at a ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. in Schoellkopf Stadium. President Jeffrey S. Lehman will present the Commencement address during a ceremony that caps two days of celebratory events on campus. Retired U.S. Gen. Wesley Clark will present the Senior Convocation address Saturday, May 28, at noon in Barton Hall.

Broadcast coverage:

The Commencement ceremony will be uplinked live to satellite Sunday at 10 a.m. There will be a signal test at 9 a.m. (Coordinates below).

A video news release, which will contain footage from the Commencement ceremonies and Clark's Senior Convocation speech, will be transmitted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday (Coordinates below).

Both Saturday's Convocation and Sunday's Commencement ceremonies also will be Web streamed live. The streaming video for both, respectively, can be accessed at the following URLs:

  • Coming to campus:

    Media planning to cover one or both of these events should register in advance with the Cornell Press Relations Office at (607) 255-6074, and credentials should be picked up in advance at 234 Day Hall, if possible.     Saturday, May 28:
  • Media round table: Clark, former supreme allied commander of NATO and a candidate in the 2004 Democratic Party Presidential Primary, will be available to answer questions at 10:30 a.m. during a media round table in the Statler Amphitheater of the Statler Hotel.
  • Convocation ceremony: The ceremony is scheduled to begin at noon in Barton Hall. Doors will open at 11 a.m. There will be a section in Barton Hall set aside for media. A multbox and power strip will be available. Media parking will be along Garden Avenue near the east end of Barton Hall. Contact the Press Relations Office for more information on media arrangements.
  • Sunday, May 29:
  • Commencement ceremony: Commencement will begin promptly at 11 a.m. in Schoellkopf Stadium. The commencement procession will assemble on the Arts Quad at 9:15 a.m. Please contact the Press Relations Office if you plan to take photographs of the procession.
  • Entering campus: If you are driving, enter campus from NYS Route 366 at Tower Road (near the Veterinary College). You must show the Cornell-issued parking pass at the roadblock at Campus and Tower roads in order to turn left on Campus Road, toward Schoellkopf Stadium. Members of the media who drive to the ceremony will need to get their credentials in advance from the Cornell Press Relations Office.
  • Parking: Limited media parking for Commencement will be provided at the east side of Bartels Hall at the west end of the Kite Hill lot.
  • Entering Schoellkopf Stadium: To enter Schoellkopf Stadium, media must have press passes distributed by the Cornell Press Relations Office. Please try to get press passes in advance. Passes also will be available beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the media entrance to Commencement at the northwest corner of Schoellkopf Stadium at the gate marked "Pink Ticket Entrance Only." A media information table will be in front of Schoellkopf Hall. Media will be escorted to reserved seating. A multbox and power strip will be available. Photographers will be escorted to locations for closer shots during the ceremony.
  • Severe weather: In the event of severe weather, Commencement will be celebrated in two ceremonies in Barton Hall: at 10:30 a.m. for students from the Colleges of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Arts and Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine; the Johnson Graduate School of Management; and the Law School; and at 1 p.m. for students from the Colleges of Architecture, Art and Planning; Engineering; Human Ecology; the Graduate School; and the Schools of Hotel Administration and Industrial and Labor Relations.
