May 2008
The members of the Class of 2008 enjoyed a picture-perfect Commencement Day, May 25. In his speech, President David Skorton said that the 6,000 newest Cornell graduates have much to look forward to and many notable achievements to celebrate. But with education and success comes a responsibility to work for the public good, he said. At Senior Convocation, May 24, cultural icon Maya Angelou addressed the class, saying that courage is the most important of the virtues, because without it no other virtue can be practiced consistently. The May 8 graduation ceremony marked a milestone in American higher education, as Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City became the first U.S. medical school to grant its M.D. degree on foreign soil.
