Engineering celebrates diversity at awards banquet

Slowly but surely the face of engineering is changing. While still underrepresented in most engineering fields, women, African-Americans and Hispanics are signing up in increasing numbers. Cornell recently celebrated their accomplishments, as well as those of students, faculty and staff who work to attract and support minorities in engineering.

At a community celebration May 3 in the Statler Hotel's Carrier Ballroom, Diversity Programs in Engineering (DPE) recognized outstanding undergraduate and graduate students, student organizations, faculty and staff with awards, dinner and music.

Shivaun Archer, a senior lecturer in biomedical engineering, received the 2009 Zellman Warhaft Commitment to Diversity Award. Established in 2007 in honor of mechanical and aerospace engineering professor Zellman Warhaft, the first associate dean for diversity in the College of Engineering, this award honors participation in DPE activities and programs, as well as commitment to diversity issues.

Shawn Nichols '10, computer science, received the Lockheed Martin-Zellman Warhaft Commitment to Diversity Award, with a $1,000 scholarship. The award recognizes his impact on the recruitment and retention of precollege and undergraduate students in engineering; service as a lead program assistant for the CATALYST Academy, a one-week summer residential program for rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors; and involvement in the National Society of Black Engineers.

Other awards presented included: Freshman of the Year to Saummya Kaushal '12, the Undergraduate Excellence in Leadership Award to Sara Traynor '09, Undergraduate Student of the Year to Rafael Aquino '10 and Graduate Student of the Year to Omotunde Babalola.

Robert Emro is assistant director of communications and media relations in the College of Engineering.
