In a resolution passed at its Nov. 14 meeting, the University Assembly (UA) "enthusiastically and unanimously" approved a revised Campus Code of Conduct prepared by its Codes and Judicial Committee (CJC). Cornell President David Skorton had asked the UA in May to undertake a thorough evaluation of the code and to report to him by Dec. 31.

The revised code is more readable, user-friendly and shorter by almost a third after condensing and consolidating some sections of the previous document. It provides for such procedural protections as the right to counsel and allows for off-campus jurisdiction (with full judicial process) when violations are considered a serious threat to the university and its academic mission.

"This proposal represents the CJC's best effort at a fair solution that addresses the community's concerns," says a letter from the UA to Skorton. "As always, the CJC and the UA stand ready to consider further changes and revisions as needed in the future. The code is a work in progress."

The resolution urges that the revised code be implemented July 1, 2008.
