Keeping Ithaca gorges
Rappelling in Cascadilla Gorge

Justin Highhouse, left, of Ithaca College and Mike Zupancic '10 rappel in Cascadilla Gorge Nov. 8.

On Nov. 8, Chi Phi Fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, Plantations Natural Areas Program, Cornell Outdoor Education, and Fraternity and Sorority Affairs partnered to pick up and haul trash out of Cascadilla Gorge.

To get at the trash, staff from Cornell Outdoor Education rappelled down the sides of the gorge. The collected trash was hauled out by Chi Phi and Lambda Chi Alpha volunteers.

In years past, fraternities had conducted cleanups of the gorge, but much of the accumulated trash was inaccessible, and safety issues prevented them from continuing. This year's effort made the process much safer, and the fraternities hope to maintain and strengthen this partnership to help keep the gorges gorgeous.
