Trustee Kevin McGovern '70 named Cornell 2007 Entrepreneur of the Year

Kevin McGovern '70, chairman and CEO of McGovern Capital and a founder or key shareholder in more than 15 companies, has been named Cornell Entrepreneur of the Year 2007. He will be honored on campus during the Entrepreneurship@Cornell Celebration, April 19-20, 2007.

The Cornell Entrepreneur of the Year award is given annually to a Cornell graduate who best exemplifies entrepreneurial achievement, community service and high ethical standards.

A member of the Cornell Board of Trustees and a founder of the Cornell Club-New York City, McGovern is active in many Cornell-related committees and teaches the course Global Innovation and Commercialization at Cornell's Johnson School.

After earning his B.A. at Cornell (1970), he earned a law degree from St. John's University School of Law (1975). He also studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

McGovern and his wife, Lisa, have two children. Their son, Jarrett, is a 2004 graduate of Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences, and their daughter, Ashley, is currently a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences.

McGovern Capital, based in New York City, is a leading private investment firm and global intellectual property rights strategist. Six of the companies in which McGovern Capital is a founder/principal/chief strategist are leaders in their respective industry's product categories. The firm has been a participant in approximately 20 joint ventures or alliances, approximately half of which have been foreign alliances.

McGovern is also co-chairman of Angstrom Publishing, which publishes with Forbes the Forbes/Wolfe Nanotech Report, and of the Silver Shield Foundation, which provides scholarships and other benefits to the children of police and firefighters killed in the line of duty in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. In addition, he is a fellow at the Foresight Institute, a leading think-tank organization for nanoscience.

The Entrepreneur of the Year was established in 1984 by Cornell's S.C. Johnson Graduate School of Management and is now managed by Entrepreneurship@Cornell.
