'Japan and Nature' exhibition opens at Sciencenter Sept. 29

"Japan and Nature: Spirits of the Seasons," an interactive exhibition at Ithaca's Sciencenter, will introduce visitors to how nature is celebrated in Japan.

"For the Sciencenter, a museum known for its interactive exhibits, this exhibition takes interactivity to a whole new level," says Lara Kimber, acting executive director. "With authentic Japanese artifacts, art supplies, costumes and other interactive materials, this exhibition invites families to explore Japan's geography and to discover how people's lives are shaped by where they live."

At the exhibition's opening Sept. 29, landscape architect and Cornell visiting fellow Marc Keane will speak at 11 a.m. on "Shiki: The Art of Nature in Japan," to illustrate how nature influences Japanese art and culture. At 2 p.m., Yamatai, Cornell's Taiko drum team, will perform. From noon to 4 p.m., Sciencenter volunteers from Japan will be on hand to demonstrate origami. The exhibition will continue until the end of 2007.

The opening celebration is supported by the Tompkins Trust Co. and its programs coordinated with Cornell's Einaudi Center for International Studies and the East Asia Program. The exhibition was developed by the Brooklyn Children's Museum, funded by the Freeman Foundation, and its tour is administered by the Association of Children's Museums.
