Cornell faculty members share their expertise in Africa and Asia

Three stories this month highlight new ways that Cornell is serving as "the land-grant university to the world." First, Cornell announced it will offer its first degree program in Africa: The university has signed an agreement with Bahir Dar University in Ethiopia to offer an MPS degree in international agriculture and rural development that will specialize in watershed management. In another Africa initiative, Cornell will support a new doctoral program at the University of Ghana to train African plant breeders to tackle issues related to crops vital to Africans' diet. Taking Cornell expertise directly to the field, Cornell and Indian researchers have developed a pest-resistant eggplant for South Asia. By about 2009 this eggplant is expected to be the first genetically engineered food crop in the region.

Charles Feeney speaks at a book party in New York City One of the most generous Cornellians alive today is one you've probably never heard of -- at least, until this week. While Chuck Feeney's name is not attached to any building or professorship, the 1956 Hotel School graduate is behind only Ezra Cornell and A.D. White in his overall contributions to the university, according to President Emeritus Frank H.T. Rhodes.
Big-name visitors are coming to campus in October

Cornell will welcome His Holiness the Dalai Lama for a sold-out lecture, "A Human Approach to World Peace," Oct. 9 in Barton Hall. Renowned Jesus scholar Marcus Borg will speak at Sage Chapel's Homecoming service, Oct. 14. The Creative Writing Program will bring writer Salman Rushdie to campus, Oct. 18. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor will visit Cornell Law School as its Distinguished Jurist in Residence during the week of Oct. 22. And comedian Stephen Colbert, who will be on campus Oct. 26, has sold out two shows.
