Student profile: Peng-Wei Tan

Major: Hotel administration (concentration in finance)
College: School of Hotel Administration
Hometown: Singapore

Why did you choose Cornell?

Because I had heard all about the Hotel School from friends and family (my sister was in Human Ecology) who had come here, I knew it was a business school with a hospitality focus. I love finance/business, and I grew up in a family that has always appreciated good food and wine, so the Hotel School made perfect sense.

Main Cornell extracurricular activity -- why is this important to you?

CHC Hospitality Consultants, of which I am the founder and managing director. It is a consulting business that develops hospitality business solutions for local and national clients. CHC has succeeded in bridging the gap between academic theory and the business world. We have worked on projects that range from market studies to real-estate valuations. Most recently, we're working with a San Francisco-based hospitality venture capital firm to help its fund-raising initiatives and with a prominent food and beverage outlet in Ithaca.

I see CHC as a gift to the school, a legacy that can be passed on to future generations for students to complete their education through experiential learning.

While at Cornell, what other accomplishments/activities are you most proud of?

As president of the Hotel School's honor society, Ye Hosts, I have helped implement initiatives to guide students in their job searches, as well as a peer-advising program to help underclassmen better navigate their years at the Hotel School.

I was selected as a Merrill Presidential Scholar, and if all goes well, I should be the first student ever to graduate with Latin honors from the Hotel School. I have made dean's list every semester and will graduate with over a 4.0 GPA.

What Cornell memory do you treasure the most?

Watching the junior consultants in CHC grow and realize their potential under my guidance. It was a definitive moment in my life where I felt that I had achieved true success.

What are your plans for next year and beyond?

I will be joining Morgan Stanley in New York as an investment banker. After that, I see myself working in a private equity company or possibly pursuing an MBA. Eventually, I would like to start my own company and travel extensively around the world with my family.
