May 2009

The 6,000 Cornellians who graduated May 24 have far fewer employment opportunities than two previous generations of alumni. But rather than dwell on their own uncertain futures, they were encouraged by Cornell President David Skorton at Commencement ceremonies "to realize that the world stands in desperate need of your skills and talents."

Before 41,935 fans in Foxborough, Mass., on Memorial Day, the Big Red men's lacrosse team fell in overtime, 10-9, to defending national champions Syracuse Orange. Despite the crushing disappointment, head coach Jeff Tambroni said he "could not be more proud" of his team. Two days earlier, Cornell had dismantled No. 1-ranked Virginia, 15-6, in the semifinals. On May 28, Max Seibald received the 2009 Tewaaraton Trophy, the premier award in collegiate lacrosse.
