October 2009

Looking toward the university's sesquicentennial in 2015, President David Skorton blended Cornell's past with a vision for the future in his Oct. 23 State of the University address. He described how the four pillars on which Cornell was built -- classical and contemporary inquiry, innovative thinking, student access to education and public engagement -- will remain relevant in the future. He also said Cornell must return to a healthy pace of hiring "hundreds of bold and brilliant" faculty over the next five years.
The assistant professor of English was nominated for her most recent book, "Open Interval," a collection of poems drawing on the intersections of astronomy and mathematics, history, literature and lived experience. She is one of five 2009 nominees for poetry. Award winners, chosen by a panel of authors in each category, will be announced Nov. 18 at a ceremony in New York City.
