Cornell head football coach Mangurian named new offensive line coach for the Atlanta Falcons

Peter K. Mangurian, the head football coach at Cornell University for the past three seasons, has been named the new offensive line coach for the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League.

In his three years as Cornell's head coach, Mangurian compiled a 16-14 overall record. In the last two seasons, Cornell – with a record of 10-4 – has won more Ivy League contests than any other league team. This past season, the Big Red took second place in the league.

"Pete Mangurian made an immediate impact on Cornell football. He has a commanding presence and extensive knowledge of the game," says J. Andrew Noel Jr., Cornell's director of athletics. "He heightened interest and expectations each fall among the athletes, the Cornell community and our opponents. Pete emphasized excellence in all aspects of our operation. His work ethic and determination resulted in exciting championship runs in 1999 and 2000. He is a highly regarded leader in our department."

Says Mangurian: "Dan Reeves and the Atlanta Falcons organization are providing me and my family with a tremendous opportunity. I obviously have tremendous respect for Dan and look forward to working with him again."

Reflecting on his time at Cornell, Mangurian says, "I believe we have made some meaningful steps in the football program at Cornell. None of it would have been possible without the efforts of a great staff, dedicated players and a supportive alumni and administration.

"I know we did things the right way. I believe we have created a standard of excellence from which champions are born, and I look forward to watching this program reach its ultimate goal. I believe Cornell football is something the university and community should be proud of. I know I leave with a tremendous pride in our program and an appreciation for the very special young men who make up this team. I will miss them most of all." Prior to coaching at Cornell, Mangurian was an assistant coach with the Denver Broncos, working under Reeves from 1988 to 1992. In that time, the Broncos went to Super Bowl XXIV in 1990 and won the AFC Championship in 1991. Mangurian also coached in the Pro Bowl in 1991. Mangurian followed Reeves to the New York Giants in 1992, serving as offensive line coach. In 1993, the Giants went to the NFC Divisional Playoffs. In 1997, Reeves joined the Atlanta Falcons, and Mangurian became his offensive assistant coach.

Mangurian became Cornell's 23nd head football coach in 1998. In addition to his NFL experience, Mangurian also has been the offensive line coach at Southern Methodist University, New Mexico State University, Stanford University and Louisiana State University (LSU).

Mangurian received his bachelor's degree in political science in 1978 from LSU, where he played defensive tackle on the school's football team.

He is a native of Los Angeles and is a graduate of Buckley High School in Sherman Oaks, Calif., where he lettered in baseball, basketball and football.
