Celebration of David Owen brings in former students to ponder ancient Iraq

David I. Owen, the Bernard and Jane Schapiro Professor of Ancient Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, was honored Oct. 29 at a symposium in his honor titled "Power and Knowledge in Ancient Iraq" at the A.D. White House.

The symposium featured lectures by former students, friends and colleagues, including Jack Sasson, Vanderbilt University, ; Maynard Maidman, York University; Laurie Pearce, University of California-Berkeley; Steven Garfinkle, Western Washington University; and Aage Wesenholz, University of Copenhagen; former graduate student, Scott Noegel, chair of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Washington; Alexandra Kleinerman, former student and current Rosen Foundation postdoctoral faculty associate; Chris Monroe, Cornell senior lecturer; and current graduate student, Dustin Nash.

The symposium was sponsored by the Department of Near Eastern Studies, Program of Jewish Studies, Society for the Humanities, Archaeology Program, Religious Studies Program, and deans of the College of Arts and Sciences.
