The Department of Performing and Media Arts will present the musical "Adding Machine," Nov. 16-17 and Nov. 30-Dec. 1, in Kiplinger Theatre at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts.

"Adding Machine" uses music and comedy to offer a telling look at the oppression associated with being a nameless subordinate. The story concerns Mr. Zero, a man replaced by an adding machine after 25 years on the job, who is driven by rage to murder his employer.

Based on a 1923 play by Elmer Rice and adapted by Joshua Schmidt and Jason Loewith, the musical earned several Drama Desk Award nominations and won two Outer Critics Circle Awards and four Lucille Lortel Awards, including Outstanding Musical. It premiered in 2007 at the Next Theater in Illinois and off-Broadway in 2008.

The Schwartz Center production is directed by Michael Doliner '13, a biology and theater arts major.

"Joshua Schmidt [the composer] has managed to completely revitalize and reinvent both his source material -- the 1923 play -- and the entire genre of musical theater," Doliner said. "It is an exciting work that is creating major changes in the theater community and has been rapidly produced by theater companies across the nation since its debut five years ago."
