Science and nature fun

The Museum of the Earth and Cayuga Nature Center will have a Community Day Celebration with free admission May 24, for a day filled with science and nature exploration for the entire family.

Among the activities, visitors can check out the coral aquaria at the museum, with new species continually being added; view permanent exhibitions on glaciers and “A Journey Through Time” with fossils; or climb TreeTops at the Nature Center for a bird’s-eye view of Denison Falls.

Museum of the Earth is at 1259 Trumansburg Road (Route 96). Cayuga Nature Center is north of Ithaca on Route 89.

Instruction and technology

The 2014 Conference on Instruction and Technology, “Objects in the Mirror are Closer Than They Appear: Reflection, Innovation and Learning,” will be held May 27-30 at Cornell.

Formerly known as the Conference on Instructional Technologies, the event was established in 1992 by the State University of New York Faculty Advisory Council on Teaching and Technology. The conference provides faculty and instructional support professionals with opportunities to explore ways to improve learning with technology, share experiences and expertise, discuss common problems and brainstorm solutions.

Falconry on display

The ancient and still vibrant practice of falconry is the subject of an exhibition, “‘An Extreme Stirrer-Up of Passions’ – Falconry at Cornell and Around the World,” through June 2 at Mann Library, with displays in the Mann lobby and Top Shelf Gallery. Free and open to the public.

The exhibition shows the history of falconry through photography, artwork, artifacts and other items from Cornell University Library’s extensive falconry collection.

Biotech open house

The Cornell community is invited to attend the annual Biotech Open House, Friday, May 30, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in G10 Biotechnology.

The free event offers an overview of the Institute of Biotechnology, including the Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC), and presentations on the Center for Advanced Technology/Life Science Enterprise and the McGovern Center for Venture Development in the Life Sciences, a Cornell incubator for life science companies.

There will be tours of the BRC core facilities and of the McGovern Center’s bioincubator, as well as information on starting your own biotech business, a poster session, pizza and door prizes.

BRC supports research by investigators at Cornell and outside institutions with state-of-the-art technologies and services including genomics, proteomics and mass spectrometry, imaging, bioinformatics, bio-IT and advanced technology assessment.

Dump and Run donations

Campus Life’s 11th annual spring Dump and Run collection is accepting donations of clothing, furniture, nonperishable food and other useful items now through June 1.

Collection bins can be found in all undergraduate residential buildings, cooperative residences, graduate housing communities, sororities, fraternities and community centers, as well as in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Anabel Taylor Hall, Day Hall, Willard Straight Hall and Humphreys Service Building.

Dump and Run volunteers also are available to pick up donations off-campus; to arrange for pickup email dumpandrun@cornell.edu with at least three days’ notice.

Donations accepted will be resold at the annual Dump and Run sale during Cornell’s opening weekend, Aug. 23-24. Proceeds from the sale will benefit local nonprofit organizations; last year’s sale raised more than $60,000.
