Nominations sought for new faculty fellowship

Underrepresented, tenured faculty members are asked to nominate themselves or colleagues for a Public Voices Fellowship, a new initiative to increase the public impact of the nation’s top thought leaders. The application deadline is Dec. 1.

The Public Voices Fellowship is part of a national pilot initiative launched by The OpEd Project in partnership with universities and foundations nationwide, including several peer institutions. Fellows completing the program will join a national network of fellowship alumni, allowing for knowledge-sharing and innovation across Cornell.

“This one-year fellowship will provide a Cornell cohort of 15 to 20 fellows with resources, skills and access to ensure their ideas help shape and inform academia and the public conversation,” said Yael Levitte, associate vice provost for faculty development and diversity. The Provost’s Office for Faculty Development and Diversity is sponsoring the initiative.

Fellows will participate in daylong workshops in 2015 on Jan. 14-15, March 11, May 27 and Sept. 16. The curriculum combines game-based learning with the latest research on influence, including how ideas spread, when and why minds change, how credibility is built, and how impact is created.

Fellows at other institutions have published in The New York Times, CNN, the TED blog, the Huffington Post and the Washington Post, among others. They have briefed Congress, advised the White House, launched new research studies and centers, and sparked national and international debate.

They will join monthly calls with high-level media insiders, receive weekly email support and news alerts, and will be assigned to work with top journalist mentors for one-on-one coaching throughout the year. Upon completion of the fellowship, they will have access to The OpEd Project’s national network of high-level journalist “mentor-editors” for continuing support.
