Kotlikoff is acting president as Garrett continues treatment

Michael Kotlikoff, acting president of Cornell University, shared an update on Feb. 22 that President Elizabeth Garrett has been released from the Intensive Care Unit following surgery and remains at Weill Cornell Medicine for continued treatment for colon cancer.

“I remain in touch with her, and she has asked that I convey to the entire Cornell community her appreciation for all the well-wishes and prayers. The outpouring of support has meant so much to her and Andrei,” Kotlikoff said.

Robert S. Harrison, chairman of the Cornell University Board of Trustees, announced Garrett underwent surgery Feb. 19 and that she had officially delegated the duties and powers of the presidency to Kotlikoff, as provided by the University Bylaws.

On Feb. 8, Garrett announced she had been diagnosed with colon cancer and would pursue aggressive treatment at Weill Cornell Medicine.

Kotlikoff is the fourth provost in Cornell history to be named acting or interim president.
