Celebrating April as Mathematics Awareness Month

The Cornell and Ithaca communities can see a unique blend of mime and mathematics during two days of events planned by the Cornell Department of Mathematics to celebrate April as Mathematics Awareness Month (MAM). The math-themed events and speakers are scheduled on April 19 and 20.

The MAM Public Lecture will feature Tim Chartier, the Joseph R. Morton Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Davidson College and the Museum of Mathematics. Scheduled for Friday, April 19 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., in Schwartz Auditorium, Rockefeller Hall, Chartier, renowned for his expertise in sports analytics, will talk about bracketology (predicting outcomes in brackets such as the March Madness basketball schedules) and innovative mathematics performances.

The celebration continues on Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m with workshops suitable for both adults and families at The Cherry Arts, 102 Cherry St., in Ithaca. There will also be "Mime-matics" performances featuring Chartier and his wife, Tanya, who will blend mathematics and miming for a unique experience.

“I'm looking forward to a dynamic lecture on data analytics and its role in sports, accessible to all Cornell students,” said Tara Holm, professor and chair of the mathematics department. The Chartiers will “bring great skill and an interesting perspective embodying abstract mathematical ideas through physical theatre.”

More updates and detailed information can be found on the department’s Math Awareness Month website.
