The latest statistics on the 2008 entering freshman class at Cornell indicate a strong, smart and diverse group. With more than 32 percent of the Class of 2012 identifying themselves as "students of color," more than 88 percent from the top 10 percent of their high school graduating classes and more than 10 percent from other countries, the newest Cornellians are bright and wide ranging.

The numbers indicate Cornell's ongoing commitment to recruiting the best and the brightest, said Doris Davis, Cornell's associate provost for admissions and enrollment, and to maintaining a diverse campus population to ensure a well-rounded educational experience for all students.

"The Class of 2012 looks to be an excellent blend of smart and talented young people from a wide variety of backgrounds," Davis said. "We are proud that they have chosen Cornell." Some highlights of the Class of 2012 (all numbers are as of July 15):

• 3,183 entering students
• 88 percent from the top 10 percent of their high school class
• 50.1 percent male, 49.9 percent female
• 18 percent Asian-Americans
• 4 percent African-Americans
• 6 percent Hispanic-Americans
• 0.4 percent Native Americans

Details about transfer students include:

• 616 entering transfers
• 23 percent report themselves as students of color
• 11 percent international (excluding permanent residents).
