Entomologist Soderlund honored with research award
David Soderlund
Soderlund

The Agrochemicals Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) has awarded David M. Soderlund, professor of insecticide toxicology and chair of the entomology department at Cornell's New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, the International Award for Research in Agrochemicals at its national meeting in Philadelphia Aug. 19.

Soderlund, who has been at Cornell since 1978, was among the first in the insecticide toxicology research community to incorporate molecular biology tools in research on insecticide action and resistance. His early research on the pyrethroid insecticides established new relationships between chemical structure and metabolism in insects. His recent research has explored the actions of pyrethroid and pyrazoline-type insecticides on cloned sodium channels in rat and human nerve cells. This research contributes to improved understanding of the human nervous system, with important regulatory implications.

With more than 160,000 members, the ACS is the world's largest scientific society.
