The University Assembly's Codes and Judicial Committee (CJC) will discuss the latest input on revisions and recommendations to the Campus Code of Conduct Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. in Room B12 Day Hall. The session is open to the campus community.

The revisions to the code, which defines appropriate behavior and disciplinary actions required when rules are broken, were proposed by Barbara Krause, former Cornell judicial administrator. Among its many other responsibilities, the University Assembly (UA) has authority over the code and the Statement of Student Rights.

In November, the CJC was delegated by the UA to submit a report no later than March 7. The CJC met in early December and identified three issues to serve as a starting point to tackle the difficult issues raised by the Krause recommendations.

The three principle topics chosen by the CJC:

• Who has legislative authority over the campus code and judicial system?
• Will the campus judicial process remain independent of Cornell's administration?
• To whom and where does the Campus Code of Conduct apply?

President David Skorton also is seeking input on the proposed Krause revisions from the campus community by April 1, 2007, for amending, revising or replacing the current code. In an e-mail message to the campus dated Dec. 7, Skorton wrote that he hoped that this schedule would allow the board of trustees to consider recommendations at its May meeting. "This would clear the way for the implementation of any changes at the start of the next academic year," Skorton wrote. "If the University Assembly finds, however, that the CJC cannot reasonably fulfill its responsibility in the time allotted, I will consider an extension. Because there is a functioning code of conduct in place, we should take our time if that proves necessary."
