Men's hockey will battle Michigan Nov. 24 at Madison Square Garden

With three wildly successful sold-out games at Madison Square Garden in 2007, 2009 and 2011, Cornell's Meakem*Smith Director of Athletics and Physical Education Andy Noel has announced that the men's hockey team will return to the "world's most famous arena" for a game dubbed "The Frozen Apple" against the University of Michigan Nov. 24.

The non-conference NCAA Division I men's ice hockey matchup features perennial powers in a rematch of an NCAA Midwest Regional semifinal in March, which culminated with an overtime goal for the victorious Big Red.

"This is a fantastic opportunity to play another top-notch program in college hockey at such a great venue," said Mike Schafer, the head coach of men's hockey at Cornell. "We're very excited to play Michigan. Year after year, they're a great program and always have a team in contention for a national championship."

Both schools have proud college hockey traditions with significant ties to each other in both the immediate and distant past. The all-time series is tied, 3-3-1, with the last clash coming in an NCAA game March 23. Top-seeded Michigan took an early lead, but the Big Red won the game 3:35 into overtime on a rebound goal.

The University of Michigan has won the national championship nine times, more than any other program at the Division I level. Cornell has claimed the title twice (1967, 1970). The two schools have seen scores of former players forge careers in the National Hockey League.

Cornell participated in the three-year Red Hot Hockey series of games between the Big Red and Boston University in front of 18,200 passionate students, alumni, parents and fans on each occasion. The inaugural game, held Nov. 24, 2007, marked the first time a collegiate hockey game had sold out at Madison Square Garden and featured the attendance of prominent alumni from both schools. The schools' collective hockey-enthused fan bases also produced sellouts in November 2009 and 2011.

Tickets for The Frozen Apple will go on sale at 10 a.m., Monday, June 25, through Cornell's athletic ticket site or through Ticketmaster, with the best selection for Cornell fans available through CornellBigRedTickets.com.
