Michael Latham, M.D., professor emeritus and graduate school professor of nutritional sciences at Cornell, was honored at the 35th Meeting of the U.N. Standing Committee of Nutrition (UN/SCN), March 5, in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The meeting was attended by more than 500 people from more than 50 countries. Latham, who was director of Cornell's Program in International Nutrition for 25 years and is also a College of Agriculture and Life Sciences international professor, was one of three persons at the event to be formally presented with the UN/SCN Award of Merit "in recognition of outstanding lifelong contributions and service to nutrition." The other two recipients were Dr. Nguyen Cong Khan, director of the Vietnam National Institute of Nutrition and host of the conference, and Alan Berg, who was head of nutrition at the World Bank in Washington, D.C., for many years.

Also at the meeting, Latham gave a talk, "Global Actions Against Worm Infections, Measles and Malaria," which is a chapter Latham wrote for a new book, "Global Obligations on the Right to Food," edited by George Kent. The book, recently published by Rowan and Littlefield, presents the case for much greater global obligations and responsibilities for dealing with undernutrition, especially in children and women in less industrialized countries.
