Vogel

Kathleen Vogel, assistant professor in the Department of Science and Technology Studies and the Peace Studies Program, has been awarded a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The grant will support Vogel's project "Living Legacy: An Oral History of U.S. and Soviet Bioweaponeers and Its Implications for Understanding Past, Present and Future Biosecurity Threats."

Vogel, the principal investigator, will be collaborating on the project with Sonia Ben Ouagrham-Gormley of the Center for Nonproliferation Studies at the Monterey Institute for International Studies.

The research involves interviewing former U.S. and Soviet bioweaponeers in order to compile an oral history of state-level bioweapons programs. The goal is to fill a major knowledge gap about the development of these mass casualty biological weapons, and to use the oral history to inform policymaking on the use of biological weapons.

Vogel intends to generate a road map for informing and guiding future policy work in bioweapons threat prevention. The project final report, educational modules and seminar presentations will benefit current and future scientists, students and scholars.

The grant will be administered by the Peace Studies Program, an interdisciplinary program of Cornell's Einaudi Center for International Studies.
