10 faculty and staff members honored by Sphinx Head society

Ten members of Cornell's faculty and staff were recently elected honorary members of Sphinx Head, Cornell's oldest senior honor society, and recognized at a reception, Nov. 15, in the Harkness Room of Lynah Rink for "their unique contributions to undergraduate student life."

These newly inducted honorary members are:

  • Rosemary Avery, professor of policy analysis and management, College of Human Ecology;
  • Brenda Bricker, director of leadership and undergraduate research, College of Human Ecology;
  • David Dittman, the Hubert E. Westfall Professor of Accounting and former dean of the School of Hotel Administration;
  • Catherine Holmes, associate dean of students for student activities;
  • Kent Hubbell '67, the Robert W. and Elizabeth C. Staley Dean of Students and professor of architecture, College of Architecture, Art and Planning;
  • Risa Lieberwitz, associate professor of labor and employment law, ILR School;
  • Joyce Muchan '96, assistant director for student development in Cornell's Public Service Center;
  • Cindy van Es, senior lecturer, applied economics and management, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences;
  • Wolfgang Sachse, the Meinig Family Professor of Engineering, College of Engineering; and
  • Steven Squyres '78, Ph.D. '81, the Goldwin Smith Professor of Astronomy, College of Arts and Sciences.

Each year Sphinx Head taps members of the junior and senior class who have distinguished themselves in leadership and service to the university. Criteria for honorary membership in the society include significant personal and/or professional accomplishment, outstanding leadership, distinguished service to the university and interest in and commitment to undergraduate student life and development.
