Rajit Manohar, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been named associate dean for academic affairs for the Cornell NYC Tech campus.

Manohar will serve as a half-time faculty member at Cornell Tech and half time at Cornell in Ithaca. At the tech campus, he will teach a course called Physical Computing, which provides a hands-on introduction to the resources for designing and fabricating smart systems using hardware components. These include sensors and sensor networks; analog instrumentation; embedded digital processing; graphics and I/O (input/output) chips; flash memory; wired and wireless communications; PCB (printed circuit board) layout and fabrication.

"Rajit exemplifies the kind of faculty that we are hiring as we build Cornell NYC Tech, combining research excellence, innovative teaching and a strong entrepreneurial spirit," said Cornell Tech Dean Dan Huttenlocher.

Said Lance Collins, the Joseph Silbert Dean of the College of Engineering: "As associate dean for research and graduate education, Rajit has been actively promoting the college's entrepreneurial activity, but his new appointment at Cornell Tech will elevate his impact to a whole new level."

Manohar, who joined the Cornell faculty in 1998, conducts research on asynchronous design. He received his B.S. (1994), M.S. (1995) and Ph.D. (1998) from the California Institute of Technology.

He is the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER award, five best paper awards, seven teaching awards and was named to MIT Technology Review's top 35 young innovators under 35 for contributions to low-power microprocessor design.

He also founded Achronix Semiconductor to commercialize high-performance asynchronous FPGAs (field-programmable gate arrays).
