ExxonMobil Corp. gives $27K to CU engineering programs

Showing support for Cornell's engineering programs, ExxonMobil has given the university $27,000 as part of its Departmental Grants Program.

The grant, part of a $2 million contribution across 81 institutions, allows academic departments to allocate the money for various educational purposes, including scholarships, field trips, visiting speakers, equipment purchases, student and faculty travel to academic-related activities and other projects. ExxonMobil awards the grants based on schools that offer degrees in subjects from which it recruits employees.

Of the total for Cornell, $13,800 went to chemical and biomolecular engineering; $6,500 to mechanical and aerospace engineering; and $6,700 to civil and environmental engineering.

"Supporting higher education has always been a strong priority for ExxonMobil," said Truman Bell, the company's senior program officer for education and diversity. "This program enables us to provide funding to colleges and universities that play a pivotal role in preparing students to enter the workforce. ExxonMobil is proud to provide support to Cornell University, which will help to enhance departments whose academic focuses align with the workforce needs of ExxonMobil."

The amount of the grant is based on several factors, including the number of employees graduated from the specific university.

In 2009, ExxonMobil Foundation, Exxon Mobil Corp., and its divisions and affiliates provided $98 million in contributions to educational initiatives worldwide.
