Cornell President Rawlings issues statement on attacks on U.S.

Cornell University President Hunter Rawlings today (Sept. 11, 2001) issued the following statement to all students, faculty and staff:

We are shocked at the tragedy that has befallen our nation today. We do not know as yet the full extent of the loss of life that has occurred, but our hearts and prayers go out to all who have been affected.

The university wants to help all of its members cope with this set of tragedies. To that end, we ask faculty members to assist their students in responding to these tragedies, which may affect many of our students directly. Faculty members will individually determine whether to hold class or to cancel class today. If faculty members do choose to hold class, we ask them to reach out to students, and permit students unable to attend to make up class work as appropriate.

The University is offering assistance to members of the community. Members of Cornell's student and academic staff will be available throughout the day at the following locations:

  • On West Campus, Noyes Center, Third Floor
  • Willard Straight Hall Memorial Room
  • Anabel Taylor Hall Chapel
  • Bartels Field House, Ramin Room
  • On North Campus, Robert Purcell Multipurpose Room and Community Commons Multipurpose Room, Third Floor

We will also have professional staff in each of the residence halls and in each college advising office and at Gannett Health Center for individual assistance.

Faculty and staff members requiring assistance should consult with their supervisors and contact the Employee Assistance Program.

Additional information will be made available throughout the day.
