New steel arches are positioned and attached to abutments in the cliffs on the site of the Thurston Avenue Bridge on Friday morning, Sept. 15. The bridge is scheduled to remain closed to all traffic through Friday, Sept. 29. During the closing, University Avenue will open for eastbound traffic and East Avenue will remain open for southbound traffic. Initial construction on the bridge, which began in March, is scheduled for completion October 2007.
The rehabilitated bridge will be widened by 12 feet to accommodate two 5-foot-wide bicycle lanes and to widen the sidewalk on each side of the bridge by two feet.
