Light in Winter 2008 explores 'Identity'

With the theme "Identity," the 2008 Light in Winter Festival, Jan. 18-20, will celebrate science and the arts with enlightening programs and world-class performances on campus and off.

Events at Cornell Jan. 19 include: "Digital Deception," with Jeffrey Hancock, communication, 10:30 a.m. in Statler Auditorium ($5 for students/$10 general); "Balancing Acts," four women addressing race, gender, culture and sexual orientation, noon in the Statler Hall Atrium (free); "Imagined Identities," exploring the science of superheroes' powers, 1:30 p.m. in Statler Auditorium ($5/$10); "What Do Robots Dream Of?" a discussion with engineer Hod Lipson and philosopher Lee Bailey, featuring musical robots, 3:30 p.m. in Statler Auditorium ($5/$10); and a concert of South African music by Hugh Masekela's Chissa All-Stars, 8 p.m. in Bailey Hall ($20/$25, co-presented by the Cornell Concert Series).

The Hall of Identity, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Statler Hall Atrium, offers electronic music, robotics demonstrations and more, with guided tours of the virtual environment (CAVE) at the Center for Advanced Computing from noon to 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Also, David Shalloway, biophysics, will help lead a workshop combining movement, spirituality and science, Jan. 19 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Women's Community Building, 100 W. Seneca St., Ithaca ($5/$10).

On Jan. 20, Cornell Plantations hosts "Identifying With Trees" through folklore and science, in free half-hour programs at 10:10, 10:50 and 11:30 a.m.
