New Cornell show, 'Staff Notes,' premieres April 8
By Nancy Doolittle
Not everyone knows that when then first lady Hillary Clinton visited campus in 1999, her Secret Service detail received a university parking ticket. When the Secret Service tried to appeal the ticket at Cornell's Transportation and Mail Services, Spring Buck, then a new appeals representative, insisted they pay the fine.
But, thanks to a new show, "Staff Notes," which will launch on CornellCast April 8 at 1 p.m., that piece of Cornell history soon will be common knowledge. Hosted by Gary Stewart, deputy director of Government and Community Relations and a member of the Employee Assembly, "Staff Notes" will profile people who work at various jobs across campus. CornellCast will also archive the program for on-demand viewing.
"In many of our communications, we highlight high-profile staff and faculty members," said Tommy Bruce, vice president for university communications. "With 'Staff Notes,' we want to highlight those who contribute to the life of the university in substantive but perhaps less obvious ways. What do they like about their job? When have they felt that what they do on the job has really made a difference for others? What would they do if they were president of Cornell for a day?"
"Staff Notes" also will explore some of the background and aspirations of its guests -- what they had done before coming to Cornell and what they do when they aren't working, for instance.
"The show is first and foremost a conversation," said Stewart. "We want 'Staff Notes' to convey the day-to-day lives of staff members who come to work every day, do a good job, have myriad off-campus interests, and have a story to tell."
Stewart encourages anyone who is interested in nominating a staff member (including themselves) to be featured on "Staff Notes" to e-mail him at gjs28@cornell.edu.
