Cornell's 10th annual Dump and Run, the campuswide waste reduction and recycling program, seeks donations of clothing, furniture, nonperishable food and other useful items through June 1.

Student and staff volunteers collect items -- including belongings that students might otherwise throw away when leaving for summer break -- sort, organize and resell them at a large community sale Aug. 18-19, Cornell's opening weekend for the fall semester, in Helen Newman Gym. Proceeds benefit local nonprofit organizations.

Last year's Dump and Run program collected some 20 tons of reusable items and raised more than $45,000. Since it began in 2003, the program has contributed nearly $250,000 to Ithaca-area charities and many tons of reusable goods to local human service agencies.

Dump and Run collection bins can be found in all undergraduate residential buildings, cooperative residences, graduate housing communities, sororities, fraternities and community centers, and in Sage Hall, the Vet School, Law School, Statler Hall, Day Hall, Willard Straight Hall and the Humphreys Service Building.

To have volunteers pick up donations off campus, email dumpandrun@cornell.edu with at least three days notice.

Donations of nearly all useful items are accepted, including clothing, shoes, organizational units, working appliances and electronics, furniture, sporting items, coat hangers, decorations, new toiletries, nonperishable food and textbooks. The program does not accept mattresses, pillows, underwear, socks or anything broken.

Proceeds this year will benefit Cops, Kids and Toys, Loaves and Fishes; Shelter Outreach Services, Greater Ithaca Activities Center and the Cornell United Way Student Campaign. The sale is free and open to the entire community.
