Scoop du jour: Cornell to unveil 'Banana-Berry Skorton' ice cream at presidential inauguration

Cornell has a tradition of celebrating inaugurations with original ice cream flavors that express the tastes and even philosophies of its newly minted president.

Now there's Banana-Berry Skorton, a jazzy chocolate-based premium ice cream flavored with banana and a raspberry swirl named in honor of Cornell President David J. Skorton (approved with taste-testing input from wife Robin Davisson and her staff). The new flavor will debut at the inaugural reception that follows the formal installation of the president Sept. 7.

Banana-Berry Skorton follows in the frozen food-steps of a happy Cornell custom: For former President Hunter Rawlings' celebration, Cornell Dairy developed Inauguration Swirl, a chocolate ice cream with a mocha swirl. For Jeffrey Lehman's inauguration, the dairy developed Ezra and Andrew's World View, an espresso ice cream with a fudge swirl, featuring hints of cinnamon and vanilla, crushed hazelnuts and praline pecans.

To make the 3,500 individual serving cups of Banana-Berry Skorton for the inaugural reception, the Cornell Dairy will use a mélange of ingredients including 100 gallons of Cornell chocolate ice cream mix, 11 gallons of red raspberry sauce for the swirl, 11 gallons of chocolate flakes and a few pounds of banana flavoring.
